January 2015

Dear dog lover:

Thanks to you, we did it! More than $500,000 was raised from new and lapsed donors in 2014, meeting the AKC Matching Challenge!

By meeting the AKC Matching Challenge more than $1 million dollars will go toward vital canine health research that will provide better treatments, more accurate diagnosis and a deeper understand of the mechanisms that cause disease in areas such as oncology, cardiology, immunology, and musculoskeletal health.

2015 marks an exciting year in the history of the AKC Canine Health Foundation. On February 21 we will begin a year-long celebration of our 20th anniversary. This milestone would not be possible without your support and commitment to the health of dogs.

Together, we are changing the practice of veterinary medicine. Thank you again for your commitment.

Featured Grants: MircroRNAs Help Researchers Better Understand Chronic Kidney Disease and Heart Disease in Dogs
Rhodesian Ridgeback on Exam TableThe AKC Canine Health Foundation, in partnership with Zoetis Inc., announces the funding of two grants that will help accelerate novel, emerging technology in canine chronic kidney disease and heart disease. These grants, awarded from a corporate collaborative Request for Proposals (RFP), aim to better understand whether MicroRNAs can be used to accurately diagnose and predict progression of renal and heart disease, and ultimately, whether they represent potential drug targets for the alleviation of disease symptoms. MicroRNAs have emerged as important regulators of genes involved in cellular proliferation and differentiation and are now implicated in development and progression of multiple disease states.
